Activity 1: Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage:
In December 1921, Mahatma Gandhi launched the Non-Cooperation Movement. Chandrashekhar, a 15-year-old student, joined the movement. He was arrested and presented before a judge. When the judge asked his name, he replied “Azad”, which means ‘the Liberated’. The judge asked, “What is your father’s name?” Chandrashekhar answered, “Swatantra”, which means ‘freedom’. Then the judge asked, “Where do you live?” He answered, “Jailkhana”, which means ‘prison’. Chandrashekhar was sentenced to fifteen days’ imprisonment with hard labour. Hearing this, young Chandrashekhar said, “Sir! I knew you would send me to jail. So, I said that my house is in the jail.” From that day onward, Chandrashekhar Tiwari came to be known as Chandrashekhar ‘Azad’.

Read the following passage:
Saalumarada Thimmakka was born in a place called Gubbi in the state of Karnataka. Her parents were poor. She never went to school. At a young age, she had to work hard. When she grew up, she got married. Her husband was also poor. But both of them loved trees. They started planting trees along a 4 km road from her village Hulikal to a place called Kudoor. The husband and the wife worked till noon, and then took care of the trees by watering, fencing, and protecting them. This became her daily routine for many years. Thimmakka continued this even after her husband died. Now she is 105 years old. She has planted over 8000 trees in the last 80 years. She has become a role model to the entire world today.

Read the following passage:
In 2006, Mark Inglis from New Zealand climbed the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. What was special about it? Every year many people climb Everest, but his story is different: Inglis does not have both legs. He became the first man without both legs to reach the top of Mount Everest. Inglis lost his legs early. He was working as a mountain guide in New Zealand when he was caught in a snowstorm. Inglis survived, but both his legs had to be cut off. Inglis climbed Everest with artificial limbs specially made for climbing. He joined a small list of climbers, including a blind American and a Sherpa without both hands, who overcame disabilities to climb Everest. Inglis is also a professional ski guide and a cyclist. He won a silver medal in the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney. He also helps other people with disabilities.
